Actresses speaking out against sexual assault in India
In Bollywood, where fame and fortune can depend on powerful industry figures, women speaking out against sexual harassment and abuse risk intimidation, public backlash and the loss of their careers. For Channel 4's Unreported World, investigative journalist and presenter Sahar Zand travels to India with director Alicia Arce to investigate the growing #MeToo movement within one of the world's largest film industries.
Meeting prominent actresses including Richa Chadha, Zareen Khan and Parvathy Thiruvothu, alongside women's rights lawyer Flavia Agnes, Sahar explores the culture of silence surrounding sexual misconduct and the challenges facing women who dare to speak out. The documentary also follows the court case involving Malayalam cinema star Dileep, accused in connection with the 2017 abduction and sexual assault of a fellow actress. Through these stories, the film examines the power structures protecting influential men and the struggle for accountability in Indian cinema.
