South Africa’s Discipline Camps Exposed
Channel 4 · Unreported World
Inside a sinister discipline camp in South Africa
In South Africa, a growing industry of military-style discipline camps promises desperate parents a solution to troubled teenagers. For Channel 4's Unreported World, investigative journalist and presenter Sahar Zand travels to South Africa with director Katie Arnold to investigate the controversial institutions claiming to reform children through strict discipline and punishment.
Gaining rare access to Rising Stars Generation, a camp run by self-styled “Emperor General” Prince Motlou, Sahar witnesses children subjected to harsh treatment, including exhausting drills, humiliation and physical punishment. As the investigation unfolds, children come forward with disturbing allegations of physical and sexual abuse, while questions emerge over the deaths of two boys at a previous camp linked to Motlou. The documentary exposes the dangers facing vulnerable children within South Africa's largely unregulated troubled teen industry — and raises urgent questions about accountability and safeguarding.

Impact
The investigation prompted police scrutiny and child-protection intervention following allegations of abuse at a South African discipline camp. By the time the team left South Africa, the camp was subject to two separate investigations: one into the deaths of two teenagers, and another into allegations of child abuse.
